OCR PDF to JSON: Scanned Document Guide

The OCR to JSON Pipeline

OCR can extract text from scanned pages, and AI-assisted JSON output can help organize document information for review. Fields depend on the source; every result needs checking. Custom schemas are not offered.

Scanned PDF → OCR Engine → Text Recognition →
AI Analysis → Field Extraction → JSON Output

Why JSON Output?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is ideal for:

  • API integrations - RESTful services
  • Database storage - MongoDB, PostgreSQL JSONB
  • Frontend consumption - React, Vue, Angular apps
  • Data pipelines - ETL processes

OCR + AI: The Winning Combination

OCR Alone

Converts image to text, but output is unstructured:

Invoice #12345
Date: Dec 3, 2024
Customer: ABC Corp
Item: Widget Quantity: 100 Price: $5.00
Total: $500.00

OCR + AI Intelligence

Illustrative fields a reviewer might organize after checking the source (fictional, not a guaranteed PDFDrill output):

{
  "invoice_number": "12345",
  "date": "2024-12-03",
  "customer": "ABC Corp",
  "items": [
    {
      "name": "Widget",
      "quantity": 100,
      "unit_price": 5.00,
      "total": 500.00
    }
  ],
  "total": 500.00
}

Step-by-Step: OCR PDF to JSON

Step 1: Upload Scanned PDF

Upload a legible scan through the dashboard. Check page order, cropped edges and image quality.

Step 2: Enable OCR and Select JSON Output

Use the OCR and output options available in the dashboard. Review dates, names, signs and decimal points against the source.

Step 3: Process and Retrieve

Review structured output before reusing it. The current Business API documentation explains upload, status and downloads; it does not offer custom-schema or dictionary parameters.

Multi-Language OCR for JSON

Choose an available OCR language in the dashboard. Availability depends on installed OCR models; no universal language support or language-count claim is made.

Schemas in your own application, not a PDFDrill feature

PDFDrill does not offer custom schemas. After reviewing output, your own application can validate or reorganize it with a schema such as the illustration below. This is not a schema upload feature and does not define PDFDrill's output:

{
  "$schema": "http://json-schema.org/draft-07/schema#",
  "type": "object",
  "properties": {
    "document_type": {"type": "string"},
    "date": {"type": "string", "format": "date"},
    "reference_number": {"type": "string"},
    "entities": {
      "type": "array",
      "items": {
        "type": "object",
        "properties": {
          "name": {"type": "string"},
          "value": {"type": ["string", "number"]}
        }
      }
    },
    "tables": {
      "type": "array",
      "items": {
        "type": "object",
        "properties": {
          "headers": {"type": "array"},
          "rows": {"type": "array"}
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

Real-World Use Cases

The following fictional illustrations show how an application might organize reviewed data. They are not guaranteed PDFDrill fields or verified exports.

Use Case 1: Receipt Processing

{
  "merchant": "Coffee Shop",
  "date": "2024-12-03T14:30:00",
  "items": [
    {"name": "Latte", "price": 4.50},
    {"name": "Muffin", "price": 3.00}
  ],
  "subtotal": 7.50,
  "tax": 0.60,
  "total": 8.10,
  "payment_method": "Credit Card"
}

Use Case 2: Medical Records

{
  "patient_id": "P-12345",
  "visit_date": "2024-12-03",
  "provider": "Dr. Smith",
  "diagnosis_codes": ["J06.9", "R05"],
  "prescriptions": [
    {
      "medication": "Amoxicillin",
      "dosage": "500mg",
      "frequency": "3x daily",
      "duration": "7 days"
    }
  ],
  "follow_up": "2024-12-17"
}

Use Case 3: Shipping Documents

{
  "tracking_number": "1Z999AA10123456784",
  "shipper": {
    "name": "ABC Corp",
    "address": "123 Main St, City, ST 12345"
  },
  "recipient": {
    "name": "XYZ Inc",
    "address": "456 Oak Ave, Town, ST 67890"
  },
  "packages": [
    {"weight": "5.2 lbs", "dimensions": "12x8x6 in"}
  ],
  "service": "Ground",
  "estimated_delivery": "2024-12-10"
}

Reviewing OCR output

OCR output should be checked against the scanned source before it is reused. PDFDrill does not provide a general OCR confidence score or automatic approval signal.

Optimization Tips

1. Pre-process Images

  • Deskew rotated scans
  • Remove noise and artifacts
  • Enhance contrast

2. Choose Correct Language

Mismatched language models reduce accuracy significantly.

3. Review specialist terminology

Custom OCR dictionaries are not offered. Check specialist terms manually against the scanned source.

Conclusion

OCR and AI-assisted JSON output can help prepare information for review and reuse, without custom schemas. For financial scans, follow the scanned bank statement guide instead of treating generic JSON as a reconciled ledger.
